Rosette's & Cockades

From the 'Well Shod Shoe' Trio of Workshops

Shoes. What better conversation topic to start the new year with?

For the trio of workshops to start the MOHE 2012 sessions, our focus is on footwear. It goes without saying that the rosette and cockades can be applied to the handbags and garments that make an appearance at the later trios. However, for the next 3 workshops it's all about a well shod foot and demonstrating techniques that will put the wow factor in your wedges.

Between now and the application workshop you need to put aside a pair of shoes that you want to re-vamp. MOHE request that you look for one of the following

A pair of heels hiding at the back of the wardrobe that for whatever reason you cannot part with
A pair of strappy's that have seen better days but know they should really be sent swiftly to the bin
A rescued pair of shoes from one of Sydney's very fine charity shops

So, back to the technique workshop in less that ten days time.

Constituents will be learning the new technique of manipulating ribbons to make rosettes and cockades. You will choose textures to reflect the seasons, match your ribbons to particular outfits and create a combination of styles to have maximum impact for that special occasion. The Minister of Manipulation will present 4 basic methods to transform the ribbons to create a unique and truly original product.

As usual at the workshop, constituents will be provided with detailed and beautifully hand illustrated instruction booklets and work pack to make your own rosette using one of the 4 methods. The Minister's will be at hand to assist you through the process and make suggestions on creating a product that reflects your personality.

Difficulty Rating: Easy Peasy

Skills Required: Cutting ribbon and using glue

No workshop would be complete without the MOHE Vintage Haberdashery at hand to provide beautiful ribbons from a bygone era, centre pieces from as early as 1870 and of course whimsical buttons. These are the perfect additions to your arsenal of materials to develop your skills in creating the advanced cockade designs.

If you prefer to raid your sewing box or purchase items elsewhere then the Minister's recommend the following

Your ribbon choices compliment each other through colour, texture or pattern

Vary the widths in your ribbon selection

No more than 1 metre of ribbon (for each colour, texture or pattern)

A large bead for the centre piece (at least 1cm)

A button for the centre piece

Brooch backs

It's year of the Dragon which is very auspicious for us all and the Minister's are back from Singapore, bursting with workshop ideas for the year ahead.

But first things first, January is over and where we come from...that's Spring cleaning time. Obviously this is Australia and it's not Spring, but old habits die hard and we have reviewed and refined the MOHE concept, workshops and mission for the future.

The recent workshop was a hive of activity with a trio of felt based projects to complete, unfortunately time caught up with the constituents and the afternoon ended all too quickly. So for those that did not manage to complete all the projects on the day, the Ministers have created some helpful and instructive tutorials to assist completion.

Workshop Tutorial 1

Magic Mushrooms

1. Stab stitch veins onto stalk
2. Sew numerous French or Bullion knots on the cap
3. Sew stalk to white felt using running stitch
4. Sew cap to white felt using running stitch
5. Sew white felt to needle case front cover using running stitch

Your Toadstool Needle Case is ready for shiny silver needles!

Toadstool Trivia:
A number of wild toadstools and mushrooms have hallucinogenic properties. This particular toadstool' s poison affects the nervous system and the Vikings would eat them before going into combat in order to obtain their fighting frenzy. This fighting frenzy was known as 'Beserk' which is where the phrase is derived.
The mythology behind the colour of this recognisable toadstool was due to a Viking God's horse. The Viking God Wonton was being chased by devils, as his stead galloped away the red foam from the horses mouth fell down to the earth and stained the caps of the white mushrooms.

1. Using textile glue stick Robin body onto heart

2. Using textile glue stick redbreast and white tummy onto Robin's body

Robin Redbreast Trivia:

The Robin is a very friendly little bird that does not migrate and sticks out the harsh European winters. Known for hopping close by as you shovel snow from the garden path, it will perch on your spade as you rest, or eat from your hand if you have some crumbs.

The Sunday School version of explaining the Robin's red breast is very sweet. As Christ hung on the cross bearing a crown of thorns, the little bird took great pity on his pain and tried in vain to remove the crown of thorns to alleviate some of his suffering. Unfortunately, the little bird only succeeded in pricking his chest upon the thorns and as a result Christ's blood trickled onto the white chest feathers and made a permanent stain.

1. Place lace on vintage fabric at diagonals and sew using running stitch

2. Place lace on vintage fabric in a cross formation and sew using running stitch

3. Place cerise ribbon on diagonal lace and sew using running stitch

4. Place turquoise ric-rac on cross formation lace and sew using zig-zag stitch

5. Sew button in centre of cross over points

6. Place vintage fabric onto felt and sew two longest lengths and one shortest length together using running stitch

7. Fill cushion with wadding

8. Sew remaining shortest end using running stitch

Union Jack Trivia:

In 1603 James VI of Scotland inherited the English and Irish throne uniting then with Scotland. A new flag was designed to reflect this 'union'.

The jury is still out with reference to 'Jack' in the title, either being a shortened name for James or referring to the flag flown from a bowsprit of a ship.

Not Christmas dear Constituents, but another MOHE workshop!

To end the year on a crafting high note, the Minister's have a very special workshop planned for December incorporating their favourite British crafter.

To those amongst you that speak her name in hallowed tones, yes...you heard right, a Cath Kidston Christmas.

The Ministers made a seriously large selection of purchases from the Sloane Square store in London and at last, these treats have arrived on Australian shores. The Minister of Artistic License will be guiding you through the world of Cath Kidston when shabby chic, vintage inspired and retro were just twinkles in a marketer's eye.

What on earth can you expect to learn at a Ribbon manipulation workshop...how to tie a few fancy bows and perhaps some ribbon embroidery?

Oh Constituents, do you not have more faith in your Ministers to surprise and amaze you with all the secret tricks of the trade? Well, we can confirm that the 2nd MOHE workshop will not fail in it's mission to teach the skills and techniques to maintain your craft credibility.

The Minister of Manipulation suggests the following generic types of ribbon to bring along. You can purchase 1-2 metres of the following ribbon types in any colour and width from your local haberdashery;

1st MOHE Workshop Concluded

The first MOHE workshop 'It's all in the detail...' was a great success at the Sir Stamford Hotel in Circular Quay. The Minister's were pleased to observe that all constituents were appropriately attired, fully equipped with crafting equipment and came prepared with empty stomachs for the delicious afternoon high tea.

The Minister for Artistic License is time poor at the moment due to educational policy commitments and apologises in advance for the lack of event images. A large number of photographs were taken of the event, so keep tabs on the blog as they will be posted by the week's end.

VIP at MOHE's First Workshop

At MOHE, The Ministers make every attempt to provide a full and stimulating workshop. Now what could be more stimulating than a little retail therapy while you tuck into a fluffy scone overflowing with cream?

The Minister's both have a certain, shall we say 'interest' in jewellery. Those of you that follow Little Passions will be aware the Minister of Artistic License has a particular fondness for 1940/50s costume jewellery. There are a number of vintage dealers that are in every fashionista's black book and MOHE is delighted to announce that the owner of Madame Fifi's will be joining us on Sunday for the workshop. Much more momentous is that Madame Fifi's has been persuaded to bring along just a few little sparklers... for you to purchase!

The Minister's have reserved the right to provide just a peep at the lovely gems that you can take home with you.
Any constituent of a sensitive disposition feeling giddy or faint due to the viewing of these divine pieces is advised to have some smelling salts at the ready

MOHE is thrilled that Madame Fifi's will be previewing the latest acquisitions from a recent visit to the United States. This preview is in advance of the Love Vintage Clothing sale and show in a fortnight which has been held each year at Cantebury racecourse.
What is even more agreeable about this preview is that there will be no queues, sales assistants breathing down your neck, pressure to purchase or that uncomfortable moment when you have to ask the price and dread the response. All items have been priced and if you start wondering why they are so inexpensive...it's because 20% has already been taken off the price for MOHE constituents.

MOHE's Mystery Gift Revealed...

The Three Weeds in Rozelle hosted yet another successful ABCD (Artist's, Bloggers, Crafters and Designers networking event) event for creative Sydneysiders. The night began with a twist as you embarked on a 'Speed Meeting' of those on the guest list and ended with an oversize goodie bag brimming with gifts from all the attendees.

MOHE's gift came with an invitation to the first workshop 'It's all in the detail...', to be held just over a week away on Sunday 9th October at 10am (see VENUE tab for more details).

The Minister's cannot wax lyrical enough regarding the quality and quantity of the delicious Afternoon High Tea that the Sir Stamford offers. It would seem that we are not alone in our high praise...

Fashionably Yummy is a delightful blog following the fashion and culinary adventures of a Sydneysider called Cindy.

The recent blog post of her sisters 'Hen's Afternoon High Tea Party' describe and detail the $44 High Tea (that we experienced last Wednesday evening) in full.

Workshop Preview Evening

MOHE took it's first Manolo Blahnik clad step into the craft world on Wednesday evening with great success. The Minister of Artistic License presented the preview session for the upcoming workshop 'It's all in the detail...' to be held on Sunday 9th October.

The constituents took full advantage of the exclusive arrangement MOHE has with the venue and pre-ordered an Afternoon High Tea to enjoy during the presentation.

For all Afternoon High Tea connoisseur's, MOHE can confirm that the $44 option truly surpassed expectations. A delicious selection of sandwiches, exquisite choice of petit fours and topped off with light and fluffy scones.

If you missed the preview evening then don't panic...on the Sunday of the workshop, the Minister will re-cap the information. The attending constituents on Wednesday evening received an information sheet with addresses of places where materials could be obtained, what to look out for in charity and vintage shops, along with images and suggestions on how to use them on garments.

Pimp My Cardigan...

Sunday Workshop: 10am, Sunday 9th October

Don't you just adore the detail on beautiful clothing, the prints and textiles, the colour combinations and exquisite features?

Unfortunately, there is normally a less than attractive price tag attached to the more than attractive garment!

Now while we cannot all snare a millionaire who keeps us in a wardrobe of haute couture, you can attend the MOHE workshop to improve your wardrobe...

The Minister of Artistic Licence has formulated a workshop where you can customise your wardrobe with a 'Made in Australia' authenticity. The Minister will be showing you various techniques to embellish a garment resulting in a couture addition to your wardrobe. So, if you have drawers stuffed with ribbons, vintage flowers, buttons, broken jewellery, retro scraps of fabric or other delights that you are dying to utilise in some way. Then this workshop is your opportunity to bring those pieces along and personalise your cardigan in a unique and innovative way.

What will I learn at the workshop?

Sewing and stitching techniques

Create textile garnishings

Button ornamentation

Trimming with ribbons and braiding

Beadwork beautification

Adorn with broken jewellery

Festoon with silk and velvet flowers

Enhance with vintage embroidered linens

Do I have to bring a garment to work on?

A plain cardigan, lightweight jumper or top. You can either bring in an existing garment you want to customise or purchase something for under $10 at your local charity shop.

Do I bring anything else?

The usual sewing box contents (pins, needles, thread, scissors etc).

All those gorgeous items that you have purchased over time, but just never found a right project to use them on. If you have had a craft clear out in recent times, then this is your opportunity to scour vintage shops, charity shops, antique markets and your granny's attic.

The Ministry suggests at this stage the viewer should read the following information in a slightly high pitched, terribly clipped 1940s English accent...and tongue planted firmly in your cheek (think Celia Johnson in 'Brief Encounter').

MOHE is an innovative group developed by two crafters who were looking for something with that little extra 'je nas sais quoi'. We have taken our best craft experiences from around the world and combined them together to make the craft group of all craft groups! Our constituents are talented individuals who express their creative skills as a hobby in their leisure time or as professionals as a business. One of the common factors that the members of the group share is a passion for everything crafty.

MOHE is Sydney's first craft group that provides monthly workshops teaching new skills and innovative techniques to members that are new to crafting or already established crafters looking for maverick inspirations. Our creative skill building craft group is inspired by vintage, pre-loved and recycling. Developed and presented by two qualified and trained teachers in Art, Textiles, Design and Technology and offering expertise in a range of learning styles to suit all members. We are committed towards creating a friendly, entertaining, supportive and informative environment where members can meet like minded crafters and develop rewarding and creative relationships.
